Edit PDF Text vs PDF to Text
These two PDF tools both deal with text, but they solve very different problems. One changes what appears on the page. The other pulls text out so you can copy, review, or reuse it elsewhere. Choosing the wrong workflow usually creates extra work.

The short answer
Use /pdf-tools/edit-pdf-text when you need to fix or replace visible wording inside the PDF itself, such as a typo, label, date, or short text block.
Use /pdf-tools/pdf-to-text when your goal is to extract readable text from a PDF so you can copy it into email, notes, a CMS, or another document.
When Edit PDF Text is the right tool
- You need to correct a typo, wrong date, outdated name, or short visible label in the PDF.
- You want the final PDF page itself to show the corrected wording before you share or archive it.
- You need a browser-based workflow with a preview so you can inspect the edited page before saving.
When PDF to Text is the right tool
- You need to copy text out of a PDF for reuse in another tool or document.
- You want to search, quote, summarize, or clean up the extracted wording outside the PDF layout.
- You do not need to preserve the original page appearance in the output file.
The practical difference
Editing PDF text changes the document you send to someone else. Extraction does not. After /pdf-tools/pdf-to-text, you still have the same original PDF, plus a block of extracted text you can reuse somewhere else.
That makes /pdf-tools/edit-pdf-text the better fit for final-document corrections, while /pdf-tools/pdf-to-text is better for research, quoting, migration, indexing, or content cleanup workflows.
Best follow-up workflows
If you edit the document and then need to send it, continue with /pdf-tools/sign-pdf, /pdf-tools/protect-pdf, or /pdf-tools/compress-pdf depending on how the file will be shared.
If you extract text and realize the PDF itself also needs a correction, switch to /guides/how-to-edit-pdf-text-in-browser and then apply the changes with /pdf-tools/edit-pdf-text.
Which one should you open right now?
- Need the PDF page itself to show new wording: open /pdf-tools/edit-pdf-text.
- Need copyable text from the document: open /pdf-tools/pdf-to-text.
- Not sure because you may need both: extract first to inspect the wording, then edit the PDF only if the visible document must change.
